Builder's Risk / Installation Floater insurance for telecom contractors

Overview

Builder's risk insurance (also called an installation floater in telecom) covers physical loss or damage to structures during construction, modification, or installation. For tower contractors, this includes tower steel sections, equipment shelters, antenna arrays, cable runs, and all materials staged on site awaiting installation. Coverage typically applies from the moment materials arrive at the job site through project completion and handoff to the tower owner.

Why it matters for tower work

A tower build involves $200,000-$2M+ in materials on site at any given time. Steel sections, antennas, coax runs, and shelters are exposed to weather damage, theft, vandalism, and accidental destruction during the construction phase. Without builder's risk, the contractor bears the full replacement cost of damaged materials and the schedule impact of reordering.

MSA relevance

Required for new tower construction and major modification projects. Tower owners and turf vendors typically require builder's risk with limits matching the full project value. The policy must cover materials in transit, on site, and during installation until the tower owner accepts the completed work.
