Occupational Accident for tower and telecom contractors
Accident coverage for 1099 independent contractor tower climbers

Overview
Occupational accident insurance provides injury and death benefits to independent contractors (1099 workers) who are not eligible for traditional workers compensation. In the tower industry, many climbers work as independent contractors, and Texas — the largest tower market — does not require employers to carry workers compensation. Occupational accident policies fill this gap with medical expense, disability, and accidental death coverage.
Why it matters for tower work
The tower industry relies heavily on 1099 subcontractors, particularly for climbing work. Without occupational accident coverage, an injured 1099 climber has no injury benefits and will pursue the hiring contractor through tort litigation. A single tower fall fatality can generate a $5M+ wrongful death claim against the general contractor.
MSA relevance
Many turf vendor and carrier MSAs require either workers compensation OR occupational accident coverage for all workers on site, including subcontractors. In Texas and other non-mandatory WC states, occupational accident is the standard compliance mechanism. Some MSAs specify minimum benefit levels including $500K-$1M accidental death and $250K medical expense.
